Hi John,
Wish we had some ground hogs up here !! As for varmints.......we got
lots !!! My boy and I go out shooting gophers all summer. Generally
we jump in the Jeep and just drive the fields ,head shots only as we
usually bag em up and take them to the Wild Life Recovery Center (
they nurse injured wildlife back to health) They in turn feed these
to hawks, owls, eagles and a few other predators. Anyways, on a good
day, and a good piece of varmint territory I've been known to pack
up all the gear and head out for the day. Generally I'll pick out a
good spot and set up the bench. starting with the (.22)(.17HMR)(.22
Hornet)(.223)(.22-250) and then just keep switching off as the
barrels get hot !!!
I too love the long range stuff, but by far my favorite rifle for
dogs is a Remington LVSF in .22-250. I have shot probably close to
200 Coyotes with this gun !!! Actually I liked it so much I went out
and bought another one just like it a month later in order to turn
it into a 6BR. It is still a work in progress. Time as always is at
a premium for me. Dan Lilja spun me up a custom fluted barrel for
it.....but thats another story altogether.
Anyways here are a few pics of some of the coyotes that have since
departed to doggy heaven............ The good ones in winter go out
to a buddy of mines grandfather who skins and tans the hides. He is
a retired farmer and enjoys the company and the extra cash he makes
from these. I think he is getting rich off of us the last few years,
but it gives us an excuse to get out for the day and he usually
whips up a nice hot lunch when its -20 or 30 celcius !!! Always good
hunting when its really cold and lots of snow !!!

Hey John,
I think it's pretty neat about the coyotes being around. I guess most
folks would disagree, but hey, it gives you something else to
hunt. Living in town as I do, I've gotten into expensive airguns to
satisfy my shooting itch. Beside pigeons and starlings, we've
got plenty of roof rats here that travel around town via the telephone
wires. I've set a birdfeeder up that runs from a telephone pole
to a tree in my backyard. At night the rats will run from the phone
line down the wire to my feeder. I pick them off with an HW97 scoped
air-rifle. It's small-scale varmint hunting, but it's all I've got.
Lot's of fun for me and my son though! Here's a few pics.
Take care John,
-Carlton

Rebekah's first deer shot at 223
yds. She is only 9. Rebekah's gun is a 243 WSSM in a Winchester
Stealth II with a Leupold VX-III 6.5x20x50 with a Varmint duplex.
She uses a 95-grain factory bullet. These pics are from her first
deer, but she has recently killed 2 other deer..... with one shot.
And by the way, I now know why you don't like the brass for
reloading this caliber. Thanks for putting Rebekah's pic up.
